Billy Monger to take on epic challenge for Comic Relief

Inspirational young racing driver Billy Monger is to take on a 140-mile triathlon in aid of Comic Relief.

In 2017, at the age of 17, Monger was involved in a crash at Donington Park that led to him having both legs amputated - but he was back behind the wheel within a year.

Now 21, the athlete will start his challenge with an epic hike, followed by kayaking, cycling and a final five-mile walk to the finish line at the Brands Hatch circuit.

"I used to cycle a bit before my accident," he told The Sun. "But since then, I've never cycled an upright, normal bike.

"So in the last couple of months I've learned how to cycle and kayak, pretty far.

"After the first lockdown I went to a mate's house and we walked into town, about 2.5km.

"After months away from fitness and training, I was in a lot of pain. I thought, 'I'm 20, I don't want to get to 40 and not be able to walk a couple of kilometres'."

Monger's endeavours will be filmed for a one-hour documentary airing on BBC One in March.
